The experience
West of Cannes, the coast changes from resort frontage to the red volcanic rock of the Esterel. A route can pass La Napoule and Theoule-sur-Mer, then explore coves where the rock meets deep blue water. It is visually distinct from the Lerins Islands and works well for swimming and photography. A combined Lerins-and-Esterel day is possible on a suitable boat, but it is better to choose a few stops than race along the entire Corniche d'Or.
Use these as the shape of the day, with enough time at each stop to swim, relax and enjoy being there.
Cruise past La Napoule's waterfront and distinctive chateau as the urban Riviera begins to give way to the Esterel. It is an elegant opening to the westbound route.
Theoule-sur-Mer sits where red hills meet blue water, with small beaches and villas tucked into the coast. Pause for a swim or lunch while the scenery becomes steadily more dramatic.
Continue into an Esterel inlet chosen for the day's water. Against the rust-coloured rock, even a simple swim feels cinematic, with excellent snorkelling and photographs from the boat.
